This February, we’re turning up the volume on joy, vibrancy, and the incredible beauty of the Black experience. With our Black Joy Is Beautiful campaign, IPSY is honoring the pioneers who paved the way, while celebrating today’s trailblazers who redefine Black beauty in every shade, shape, and style.

Black beauty is timeless. Black joy is unstoppable. And together, they’re beautiful.

The Campaign Video: A Parade of Joy

In our hero video, the infectious rhythm of a second line fills the air. Roller skaters glide effortlessly, hair bouncing in the breeze, while a vibrant cast dances, jumps, and revels in every moment of self-expression. This is joy—unfiltered, unapologetic, and beautifully Black.

Narrating it all is none other than Gabrielle Union (our February Icon Box curator), lending her unmistakable voice to this dynamic celebration of Black beauty and resilience. With every word, she captures the essence of Black joy as both legacy and liberation: "What is joy? It’s the art of expressing yourself authentically and unapologetically." Her words remind us that beauty isn’t just seen—it’s felt. Passed down through generations, Black joy is “an unbreakable legacy of pride and resilience.”

This video isn’t just a visual masterpiece—it’s a love letter to a community whose beauty has shaped the culture and continues to redefine it. And having a powerhouse like Gabrielle Union as its narrator? Iconic. Her presence amplifies the message: Black joy is bold, it’s radiant, and above all, it’s beautiful.

IPSY x Project Level: A Partnership for Creative Empowerment

We’re proud to continue our partnership with Project Level, a nonprofit empowering Bay Area youth to express themselves through the arts. For over a decade, Project Level has provided mentorship and resources to underserved students, helping them find their voices in industries like film, music, fashion, and beauty.

At IPSY, we sponsor Project Level’s Beauty Department, which inspires students to explore their passions for makeup and self-expression. Through workshops, resources, and hands-on experiences, the program gives these young creatives the tools they need to thrive in the beauty industry.

“Our partnership with IPSY has been transformative,” says Camielle Heagney, Beauty Department lead. “Seeing our students gain confidence and realize their potential has been so rewarding.”

Exclusive Designs: Limited Edition Mystery Bags

This Black History Month, our Limited Edition Mystery Bags are all about honoring Black beauty and creativity. Designed by the talented members of Project Level’s Beauty Department, the bags celebrate hair textures and the stories they tell.

The small bag features a heart pattern inspired by braids, while the silk fabric nods to protective hair bonnets. Both bags include a heart-shaped zipper pull, representing self-love—a reminder that self-care is an essential act of joy.

Available exclusively in the IPSY Shop, these Mystery Bags are filled with curated beauty favorites. And every design is a tribute to the diverse beauty of our community. “These bags honor our stories and say, ‘You are seen, and you matter,’” say Danielle Banks and Richard Bougere, Project Level’s founders.

Celebrating Black-Owned Beauty Brands

Throughout February and beyond, we’re spotlighting Black-owned beauty brands in the IPSY Shop. These brands (including LYS BEAUTY, DANESSA MYRICKS, FENTY BEAUTY, PAT McGRATH LABS, and so many more!) exemplify creativity, resilience, and excellence, and we’re proud to champion the faces behind them.

From bold lipsticks to nourishing haircare, these products showcase the artistry and innovation at the heart of Black beauty. Whether you’re shopping for your next holy grail or looking to support Black entrepreneurs, this assortment is the perfect way to celebrate the month.

Join Us in Celebrating Black Joy

At IPSY, we believe in the power of joy, the beauty of self-expression, and the importance of honoring every shade of Black beauty—not just in February, but every day of the year.

Through partnerships like Project Level, exclusive designs, and a commitment to supporting Black-owned brands, we’re working to uplift and empower the Black community. Because Black joy is beautiful, and it deserves to shine.
