There are plenty of tried-and-true makeup hacks: Lipstick doubles as a blush, contact lens solution revives dried mascara, and careful contouring can even change your face shape. One of the most slept-on beauty tricks, however, comes down to one product.
For many makeup artists—including New York City–based Sophia Vallejos—nude eyeliner is one thing they can’t go without. A light-colored liner can be used in so many ways, namely to accentuate your eyes and make them appear bigger and wider. But besides the doll-like look, which is surprisingly easy to recreate, nude eyeliner can be used to blur fine lines, accentuate your pout, and more.
Of course, you’ll first want to figure out what shade of eyeliner is right for you. A white eyeliner can create a harsh contrast, so Vallejos recommends picking a color closer to that of your concealer (you can’t go wrong with the TARTE™ Fake Awake™ Eye Highlight in Nude). That way, you’ll end up with a softer finish, leaving you with a more natural effect—no matter which way you choose to apply your liner.
It's about glam time you treated yourself.

Applying nude eyeliner to your lower lash line is one of the most popular beauty hacks, for good reason. “I like to use it underneath the eyes to make them look bigger,” says Vallejos. For an extra-subtle look, she recommends setting the liner with a taupe or nude eyeshadow, using a smudging brush to blend it all together. This will create the illusion that your lash line is lower than it actually is, making your eyes look bigger.
Didn’t get enough sleep last night? Fake the well-rested look with nude eyeliner, applying it to your inner corners. This subtle placement will illuminate your eyes by creating a brighter, more wide-eyed appearance.
Don’t underestimate the power of nude eyeliner—it can luminate your look with even the most demure detailing. “My favorite way to use nude eyeliner is to brighten up tired eyes,” says Vallejos. Skip the white eyeliner and opt for a more natural finish by applying your nude liner in your waterline.
Want to give your brows a sharp finish? After applying your usual brow powder or eyebrow pencil, clean up the edges with a nude eyeliner, taking care to blend the color in with your finger or a smudging brush. Vallejos likes to brighten up the underside of her brows with a nude eyeliner for a soft highlight and precisely sculpted brows.
You’re probably aware that lip liner can sculpt out your pout, but did you know nude eyeliner can help define your lips too? Try applying some to your Cupid’s bow to enhance the fullness of your upper lip, or to blur any fine lines around the edges. This trick is especially helpful if you’re wearing a darker lipstick shade like red or brown.
Nude eyeliner makes blurring fine lines pretty easy. Simply scribble a bit of product where you have wrinkles or indentations, then blend into your skin with your fingers or a stiff brush. Set with a little bit of powder. “A nude eyeliner can also be used to cover up a red spot or pimple,” says Vallejos. “Consider it a more foolproof alternative to concealer.”
